A suspected robber was killed in police custody in a reported ‘gunfight’ between police and suspected robbers in Raipur area of Daudkandi in Comilla on early Wednesday.
The deceased, Babul Hossain, 35, son of Iman Ali of Purcherchar area under Madhabdi upazila in Narsingdi district, was wanted in 22 cases field with different police stations in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Narsingdi and Comilla districts, police claimed.
With Babul, media reported death of at least 54 people in ‘gunfight’ incidents at different places of the country since January this year.
Daudkandi police station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said police arrested two — Babul and Maruf Hossain Lablu of Shibchar in Madaripur — from Uttara area in Dhaka Monday night in a case of hijacking a covered van lodged with his police station on April 11 and recovered the booty from Dhaka as per their information.
They were brought to Daudkandi police station on Tuesday and, at night a team of police went to Raipur area on Dhaka-Chittagong highway to catch the cohorts of Babul and Maruf, the OC claimed.
As the team reached Raipur at about 3:00am, he claimed, the detainees’ cohorts, sensing police presence, opened fire on police and tried to snatch the detainees. Police retaliated by firing on the suspects.
The OC claimed that as the ‘gunfight’ was over, they found critically injured Babul and took him to Comilla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Mizanur claimed that four policemen — inspector (investigation) Nazrul Islam, assistant sub inspector Pradip Das and constables — Ibrahim and Sohrab —were injured during the incident.
A pipe gun and a few bullets were recovered from the scene, he said.
