A faction of pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University, led by former vice-chancellor Sharif Enamul Kabir, observed daylong strike on the campus to Tuesday protesting against the violation of university act.

Eight teachers of both VC-backed and anti-VC groups claimed that they were assaulted during the strike.

VC-backed panel teachers — Shaheed Salam Barkat Hall provost Ali Azam Talukdar, and Shaheed Rafiq Jabbar Hall provost Sohel Ahmed, also former proctor, were allegedly assaulted by anti-VC panel teachers; while demonstrating teachers claimed that six of their colleagues —Awlad Hossain, Sohel Rana, Kamal Hossain, Kahandakar Hasan Mahmud, Tanjinul Haque Mollah and Reazul Karim Talukder were assaulted by VC-backed panel teachers, including JU proctor Shiked Zulkarnain.

Farid Ahmed, while addressing a press conference at 12:00pm, said that anti-VC teachers would launch tougher movement demanding resignation of vice-chancellor Farzana Islam if she did not take any step against the assaulters by 4:00pm.

Witnesses said that anti VC-panel teachers locked the university transport office around 4:00am as per their scheduled programme.

The demonstrating teachers did not allow VC Farzana Islam to attend her office and hurled abusive words at her.

Around 60 VC-backed teachers formed a human chain on the campus protesting at the incident.
