The Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5 on Tuesday jailed five former officials of Oriental Bank, now renamed as ICB Islamic Bank Limited, for 68 years in four graft cases.
Judge of the court Md Akhtaruzzaman also fined the convicts – former senior vice-president of the bank Shah Md Harun, former senior assistant vice-president Abul Kashem Mohammadullah, former senior executive vice-president Mahmuda Hossain, former executive vice-president Kamrul Islam and former deputy managing director Fazlur Rahman – Tk 4.2 crore each.
The court also issued warrants for the arrest of the convicts as they were still in hiding, ordering the execution of the sentences from the date of their surrender or arrest.
The court jailed the bank’s former assistant vice-president Torikul Islam and client Salauddin for 17 years in two other cases. It also acquitted the bank’s former executive officer Inamul Haque of the charges.
According to the case details, in 2006, the Bangladesh Bank dissolved Oriental board of directors after detecting massive irregularities, and converted it to ICB Islamic Bank.
The four cases were filed in 2006 for embezzling Tk 40 million in the name of loan disbursement and the Anti-Corruption Commission submitted charge sheets in the cases in 2013.
The ICB Islamic Bank later decided to refund cash to 93 per cent of the depositors of the erstwhile Oriental Bank.
The remaining 7 per cent of the depositors were supposed to be paid as per the reconstructed scheme for repayment approved by the central bank.
The central bank extended the deadline for refunding all the affected depositors’ fund by May 2018.
The accused issued Tk 4 crore loan to four fake establishments namely Mrs Anowara Electronics, Mrs Evan Tell, Nur and Sons and Mrs Aftab and Sons.
The court framed charges against the accused on January 28, 2013. Earlier on March 30, 2018, another court jailed three former Oriental Bank officials for seven years in a similar graft case.
