At least 50 people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers in Habiganj on Monday over a disputed land.
Of the injured, 20 were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital in serious condition after the incident while the rest of the injured were treated at local upazila health complex.
Locals said that there was a longstanding enmity between Pradip Sarker and Prabindra Sarker, of village Ramzanpur of Kaliabhanga union under Nabiganj upazila in the district, centring ownership of a piece of land.
Supporters of Prabir went to take possession of the disputed land at 10:00am on Monday when supporters of Prabindra tried to resist them, triggering a clash between the two groups.
Armed with locally-made sharp weapons, including bamboo sticks and spears, the rival supporters carried out attacks and counter-attacks till noon and more than 50 people of both sides were injured, locals said.
Nabiganj police officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman said that the police went to the spot around noon and dispersed the rival groups.
