The government on Sunday announced that it would procure over 10.5 lakh tonnes of Boro rice this year with the price of paddy at Tk 26 per kg and husked rice at Tk 38 per kg.
‘We have decided to procure 9 lakh tonnes of husked rice and 1.5 lakh tonnes of paddy,’ food minister Md Qamrul Islam told a news briefing after attending a meeting of the food planning and monitoring unit of his ministry at the Secretariat.
Finance minister AMA Muhith, agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed and senior officials were present at FPMU meeting.
The government procurement would start on May 2 and it would continue up to August 31 this year, said a press release of the food ministry.
The production cost of Boro husked rice was Tk 36 per kg this year and so the government would buy it at Tk 38 per kg, the food minister said.
About stock of food grains, Qamrul said that the country has sufficient stock of food grains, about 12.98 lakh tonnes, at this moment.
The target of boro rice production was 1.90 crore tonnes this year, he said.
Last year, the government set target to procure 7 lakh tonnes of paddy at Tk 24 per kg and 8 lakh tonnes of rice at Tk 34 per kg, said officials.
It could not meet the target as the millers were reluctant to supply the rice at Tk 34 due to high price of rice in market, they told New Age.
Quamrul Islam said the government would not procure wheat this year due to this year’s limited production.
Bangladesh has produced a total of 13 lakh tonnes of wheat this year, he added.
