Components of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance on Friday decided to extend support to BNP’s mayoral candidates in Gazipur and Khulna city polls scheduled for May 15.
A meeting of the alliance presided over by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office made the decision, according to an alliance leader.
The leader said that as the Jamaat-e-Islami had planned to contest the two city mayoral polls, its leader Abdul Halim told the meeting that he would convey the alliance’s decision to the party forum.
Abdul Halim assured the meeting that Jamaat, a component of the alliance, would do its best to uphold the unity of the alliance, meeting sources said.
The meeting also decided to form two coordination committees for the two city polls, the sources added.
