The main suspect in stabbing a police officer was killed in what police claimed a gunfight between detective branch of police and suspected drug traders at Saheb Kachhari area in Mymensingh town on early Wednesday.
The deceased was Uzzwal Mia, 26, son of Samor Ali of Jailkhana Road area in Gouripur municipality in Mymensingh. He was a suspected drug trader, police said.
With the deceased, media have reported deaths of at least 44 people until April 4 of the ongoing year in incidents of ‘gunfights’ with law enforcing agencies or extrajudicial killings in different places of the country.
There were 162 deaths in ‘shootout’ or ‘encounter’ or ‘crossfire’ and physical torture by law enforcing agencies in 2017, according to rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra.
Mymensingh district detective branch officer-in-charge Ashiqur Rahman claimed that a team of district DB, on secret information, conducted a drive at Saheb Kachhari area at about 2:00am to arrest Uzzwal.
He said Uzzwal and his cohorts, sensing the police presence, opened fire on the law enforcers prompting them to retaliate by firing.
The police officer said when the gunfight was over, they found seriously injured Uzzwal and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
On March 28, sub-inspector Asad of Gauripur police station was injured as Uzzwal allegedly stabbed him in the back and fled away when the police officer went on a drive to arrest the drug peddlers.
SI Asad is now undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
