The police were yet to locate the whereabouts of Rangpur public prosecutor Rathis Chandra Bhowmik five days into his reported missing in the northern city.
‘We are still trying to locate him keeping all possibilities open and hope we will come up with a conclusion shortly,’ said Md Moniruzzaman, additional deputy inspector general (intelligence and special affairs) at police headquarters.
The prosecutor in two cases for the murders of Japanese national Hoshi Kunio in 2015 and shrine caretaker Rahmat Ali, both in Rangpur, went missing on Friday.
The special public prosecutor, Rathis, popularly known as Babu Sona, was also an eye witness to war crime trial against Jamaat Islami Bangladesh’s assistant secretary general ATM Azhar.
The family claimed that he went out of the house hurriedly and unusually in the morning, without detailing the reason and had said he would be returning home by noon.
Rathis went missing just 10 days after Rangpur Special Judge’s Court judge Noresh Chandra Sarker sentenced seven Jama’at ul Mujahideen Bangladesh faction operatives to death on March 18 in the Rahmat Ali murder case.
‘We have no specific indication that the lawyer was kidnapped by any extremist force. We have no CCTV footage suggesting that he was leaving with someone,’ said one of the investigators.
The Rangpur police additional superintendent Abu Maruf Hossain said they had examined CCTV footage of the both edges of where the lawyer’s house was located, but there was no indication of him leaving on a bike as suggested by his family.
‘We got information that he was last seen at about 8:00am on the day and was heading towards Lalmonirhat. We examined all nearby CCTV footages and again found nothing,’ said the investigator.
The investigators on Tuesday had searched the backyard of his house on information but found nothing substantial.
Maruf said they were quizzing nine suspects in police custody while interrogated a number of people with the possibilities of having any information.
