Five suspects, including ward councillor Mostakim Rahman, were arrested on charges of attempted murder of a Bogra passport office assistant director.
Police arrested them from Bogra and Dinajpur between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.
On Friday morning, Mostakim, who is also a local Juba League leader, was produced before senior judicial magistrate Abu Rayhan’s court and the police sought 10 days’ remand in custody. The court did not give any order on the day.
On Thursday, three to four masked miscreants hacked Shahjahan Kabir, 38, in his hand, leg and head leaving him critically injured in broad daylight at Shajahanpur in Bogra town.
Bogra regional passport office’s office assistant Shajenur Alam on Thursday night filed a first information report with Shajahanpur police accusing 11 people in this connection.
Hasan Ali, son of Ramzan Ali of Malgram, Jibon, son of Abdul Kader, Russell Mia, son of Abu Taleb of Thanthania, and Milu were also arrested.
According to district Juba League sources, Mostakim was the town Juba League’s office secretary.
At a press briefing in his office on Friday, Bogra superintendent of police Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan
said that a police team arrested Mostakim from Satkuribazar area of Dangapara under Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur about 8:45am when he was trying to escape to India through Hili border.
The SP also said that Mostakim was accused in four other cases, including one for killing Malgram city Awami
League leader Shujanur Rahman Shujan in November 2012.
According to the FIR, Mostakim on March 27 threatened Shahjahan after he had refused to comply with his request for issuing a passport.
On Thursday Shahjahan was hacked around 1:30pm when he was crossing Koigari
area on a battery-run auto-rickshaw on his way to Shakpala bus stand from his office.
He was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra in a critical condition and was later transferred to Square Hospital in Dhaka by air ambulance on Thursday evening.
