An assistant director of Bogra passport office was hacked in broad daylight by unidentified attackers at Shajahanpur in Bogra town on Thursday.
Police said that three to four masked miscreants hacked Shahjahan Kabir, 38, in his hand, leg and head leaving him critically injured.
Shahjahan was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra in a critical condition and was later referred to Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka in the evening.
Zia Latiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Shajahanpur police, said Shahjahan was hacked around 1:30pm when he was crossing Koigari area on a battery-run auto-rickshaw on his way to Shakpala bus stand from his office.
Passport office employees suspected that Shahjahan might meet the attack as he had refused to comply with a request of local councillor Mostakin Rahman for issuing a passport.
They said that the official had expelled a number of brokers who had for long been controlling the passport office under the shelter of the councillor, who was an accused in murdering Awami League leader Sujanur Rahman Sujan.
Mostakin, also a Juba League leader, was not available when contracted over telephone after the incident.
The police said they raided his house but did not detain anyone.
