A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana’s mother to three years in jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission for hiding wealth information.
KM Imrul Qayes, the judge of Special Court-6, also fined Rana’s mother Marjina Begum Tk 10,000, ACC lawyer Rafiqul Islam told New Age.
The court ordered confiscation of one-third of her illegally amassed assets and sent her to jail after cancelling the bail.
ACC deputy director Mahbubul Alam filed the case with Ramna Police
Station on April 12, 2015, for submitting false and fabricated wealth information.
On August 29, 2016, IO Mahbubul Alam submitted charge sheet against Marjina. The court framed charge against the accused on the day and later testified seven out of eight accused.
According to case details, Marjina Begum is the owner of one part of a building at Savar Bazar road.
As ACC served notice seeking her wealth statement, she submitted a ‘false, fabricated and baseless’ information.
At least 1,129 people, mostly garment workers, were killed and some 2,515 others injured as Rana Plaza in Savar collapsed on April 24, 2013.
