Five critically burnt in Mirpur water reservoir explosion

Five people sustained critical burn injuries in an explosion at their residence’s water reservoir at Muslimbazar area of capital’s Mirpur section 12 Tuesday morning.

The victims are the house owner Yakub Ali Khan, 70, his wife Hasin Ara Khanom, 65, their tenant Yeasmin Begum, 35, her daughter Ruhi, 3, and the house’s caretaker Mahabubul Hasan, 32.

They are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn and plastic surgery unit.

One of their neighbours who brought the victims to DMCH said they heard the explosion and rushed the house on Road 19 of Muslimbazar area at about 11:00am and rescued them.

He said that the victims opened the cover of the subsoil reservoir to clean it.  As it was dark, they took a lighting candle and immediate after the explosion took place.

The burn unit’s resident surgeon Partha Shankar Paul said Yakub received 30 per cent burns while Hasin, Yeasmin, Ruhi, and Mahabubul received 90 per cent, 41 per cent, 90 per cent and 85 per cent burns respectively.

He said that conditions of all the five victims were critical as all of them received inhale burns.
