A 28-year-old man in police custody was killed and 11 others, including nine cops, injured in what police claimed as gunfight between police and suspected robbers at GM Hat area at Phulgazi in Feni on early Saturday.
The victim’s family, however, claimed that the man was picked up by police and was shot in his head and killed for enmity with some local influential people over his soil business.
The victim is Quazi Md Emran Hossain Saiful, 28, of village Kancharibazar under Chagalnaia in Feni.
He was reportedly wanted in several cases, including for robbery, police claimed.
With the death of Saiful, the media reported deaths of at least 36 people in incidents of ‘gunfights’ with law enforcing agencies or extrajudicial killings till March 17 in the ongoing year.
There were 162 deaths in ‘shootout’ or ‘encounter’ or ‘crossfire’ and physical torture by law enforcing agencies in 2017, according to rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra.
Phulgazi police station officer-in-charge Md Humayun Kabir said they conducted a raid at GM Hat area Friday evening to arrest Saiful, but he managed to flee by attacking police when Constable Abul Khayer, 45, received serious injuries.
Later at night, police lodged a case with the Phulgazi police station and arrested Saiful at his residence at night, he said.
He said police later conducted a raid at GM Hat area with Saiful and when the team reached near GM Hat Brickfield, Saiful’s cohorts opened fire on police.
Police also retaliated by firing when three suspected robbers, including Saiful, were shot, adding that nine cops were also injured during the gunfight.
All the injured people were rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital where doctors declared Saiful dead, he claimed.
He claimed that they also recovered a light gun, two cartridges, six knives and four cleavers from the spot.
The OC said among the suspected robbers, Gazi Emdadul Huq and Yunus Mia with bullet wounds were undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital under police custody.
The injured cops, who were undergoing treatment include sub-inspectors Mosharrof Hossain, Rashedul Kabir and Aiyub Khan, assistant sub-inspector Shafiqur Rahman and constables Pradip Kumar Chakma, Faruk Mia, Abul Kashem and Chandrika Tripura.
Saiful’s brother-in-law Md Harunur Rashid said police picked up Saiful from his house at about 10:00pm on Friday and killed him by shooting in his head by the Side of GM Hat Brickfield at about 3:00am on Saturday.
He said injured Emdadul, a pick-up van driver, and Yunus, a mason, received bullets in their legs.
The deceased’s paternal uncle Kazi Shah Alam alleged that his nephew had enmity with some local powerful people over his soil business and that they might have asked police to arrest Saiful and implicate in robbery cases.
He claimed that his nephew was accused in only a case over land dispute.
