Police in Habiganj on Wednesday relieved Dhallywood superstar Shakib Khan of cheating and defamation charges for using an auto-riskshaw driver’s mobile phone number in a blockbuster film Rajneeti, which the driver claimed had ‘jeopardised’ his personal life.
Police submitted charge-sheet in the case filed by auto-riskshaw driver Ijajul Mia to the court of senior judicial magistrate Shampa Jahan dropping the name of Shakib and indicting Bulbul Biswas, director of ‘Rajneeti’, and its producer Ashfaq Ahmed.
Ijajul Mia on October 29, 2017 filed the case accusing the defendants of cheat and demanded Tk 50 lakh as compensation.
In the petition, Ijajul claimed that he was receiving hundreds of calls from the female fans of Shakib ever since his phone number was used in ‘Rajneeti’ movie which was released in June, 2017, which created troubles in his family life.
The investigation officer of the case Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of DB police Habiganj, said they had dropped the name of Shakib Khan from the charge-sheet as the dialogues in a film were prepared by the director.
He said they had consulted a number of legal experts and relieved Shakib of charges based on their opinion.
Ijajul’s lawyer MA Majed said they were unhappy with dropping Shakib from charge-sheet and will file object against it.
Majed said his client sued Shakib and the director and producer of the movie on October 29 in the court of senior judicial magistrate accusing them of cheat and libel.
‘The court was initially hesitant to accept the case because it took the whole thing as fun. But we could convince it that the accused actually perpetrated a serious offense,’ he said.
‘The event affected my client personally, mentally and economically. His marriage almost broke down and he also lost his business,’ he said.
Shakib Khan said he got justice. ‘It was part of a conspiracy against me in which the auto-riskshaw driver was used by others,’ Shakib said.
