Leaders and activists of different student organisations and socio-cultural organisations on Tuesday paid tributes to Moin Hossain Raju, a leader of Chhatra Union, who was shot and killed during a demonstration against police inaction and brutal gunfight between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra League activists to establish control on Dhaka University on this day in 1992.
Earlier in the morning, wreaths were placed at the Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture near the TSC of Dhaka University as part of offering tribute to the leader, who became the symbol of resistance against hooliganism in educational institutions.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union brought out a procession to mark the day and in demand of elections to the central students’ unions in all educational institutions across the country.
They also urged the DU authorities to declare March 13 as ‘anti-hooliganism day.’
On this day in 1992, Moin Hossain Raju, who was also leader of a combine of 10 student organisations, was shot and killed while leading a demonstration against a gunfight between Chhatra Dal and Chhara League activists on the campus and police inaction in response to the atrocities and suffering of students.
Raju was also the social welfare secretary of the then Dhaka University Central Students’ Union.
Later, Dhaka University authorities in collaboration with Raju Sangsad and Chhatra Union established the sculpture in memory of the glorious sacrifice made by Raju and other students, who fought for a peaceful campus.
