Amid fears of irregularities and violence by the ruling Awami League men Gaibandha-1 and Brahmanbaria-1 would go to by-elections today.
The Election Commission said Monday that it took all possible steps to check violation of the electoral code of conduct and keep the ol law and order under control during the polling.
He listed 28 polling centres — 14 in each of the two constituencies as ‘risky’.
Brahmanbaria-1 parliamentary seat fell vacant on December 16 following the death of former fisheries and livestock minister Muhammad Sayedul Hoque.
The Gaibandha-1 constituency fell vacant on December 19 following the death of Golam Mostafa, MP.
In Brahmanbaria-1, Bodruddoza M Farhad Hossain of AL, Rezwan Ahmed of JP and Abul Kashem Mohammad Asraful Haque of Islami Oikya Jote are in the run, said acting EC secretary M Helaluddin Ahmed.
The contestants for the Gaibandha-1 seat include, Afruza Bari of AL, Shamim Hayder Patwary of JP, M Shariful Islam of Gana Front and Zia Jaman Khan of National Peoples’ Party, he said.
The main opposition BNP fielded no candidates for either seat demanding polls under neutral arrangements.
