Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the party would hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on March 19 demanding ‘unconditional’ release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.
The BNP leader made the announcement at a press conference at the party’s central office in the city’s Naya Paltan area on Monday morning.
The party had to cancel the programme as it was not given permission to hold its public meeting scheduled for today at Suhrawardy Udyan, Mirza Fakhrul said.
Condemning the government for not allowing the party to hold the rally on the scheduled date, he said that they would hold rallies in Chittagong, Barisal and Rajshahi cities demanding immediate release of their chief.
‘We will hold rally in Chittagong city on March 15, in Barisal on March 24 and in Rajshahi on March 31 to realise our demand,’ he said.
A special judge’s court in Dhaka on February 8 sentenced Khaleda to five years in prison in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case and following the sentencing, she was sent to erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail in Old Dhaka.
