At least eight students of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology were injured in a clash between two rival factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League at Shaheed Abdul Hamid Hall early Friday.

Supporters of BCL RUET unit president Nayeem Rahman Nibir and general secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Tapu engaged in the fight around 11:30pm over establishing  supremacy on the campus, said Shahadat Hossain, officer-in‑charge of Motihar police station.

Three bombs were hurled during the fight, leaving the eight students injured, said Shafiqul Islam Shafi, sub-inspector and also in-charge of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital police outpost.

On information, the police rushed to the hall around 12:30am and brought the situation under control, said the OC.

BCL central committee suspended its RUET unit and issued a show-cause notice against its president Nayeem and general secretary Tapu.

Additional police had been deployed on the campus to avert further clashes.
