The central bank on Sunday handed over Bangladesh Bank Award 2017 to the country’s two renowned economists — Azizur Rahman Khan and the late Mahbub Hossain — for their outstanding contributions to the field of economy.
Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith formally handed over the awards as the chief guest to Azizur Rahman Khan and Parvin Hossain, wife of the late Mahbub Hossain, at a simple ceremony at the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management auditorium in the capital’s Mirpur area.
Each of the awards carries Tk 2 lakh, a crest and a gold medal.
Bangladesh Bank governor Fazle Kabir read out the citations of the awardees at the programme while director general of BIBM Tawfique Ahmed Chowdhury delivered the welcome address.
Chief of the Bangladesh Bank Award 2017 selection panel and PKSF chairman Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad also spoke.
Talking about Azizur Rahman Khan, the emeritus professor of economics department of the University of California, Muhith said Azizur had always been a perfectionist since his early days of life.
About Mahbub Hossain, who worked at the International Rice Research Institute and lately as the executive director of BRAC, the finance minister said Mahbub was always so much dedicated to his researches, works and learning.
After receiving the award, Azizur Rahman Khan touched upon various aspects of economics highlighting the lives and livelihoods of the people of the world especially of the people of the developing countries.
‘The year 2017 has been the best year in terms of human wellbeing and it is also for our country,’ he added.
AFM Faruk Hossain, younger brother of Mahbub Hossain, also expressed his feelings on the occasion.
