Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical Un iversity pro-vice-chancellor ASM Zakaria Swapan died on Wednesday.
He was 54.
Swapan, who was suffering from cancer, died at 11:45am while undergoing treatment at the university hospital, said the university’s public relation officer Prasunto Majumder.
Swapan, a dermatologist, was in charge of the university’s educational affairs as one of the two pro-VCs.
Swapan served as the BSMMU proctor between 2009 and 2015, before being appointed as a pro-VC in 2016.
Born in Mymensingh, he graduated from Sir Salimullah Medical College in 1988.
Swapan was the joint secretary general of the pro-Awami League doctors’ forum, the Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad, and had also served as the general secretary of its BSMMU chapter.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of ASM Zakaria Swapan.
In a condolence message, the premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family, said United News of Bangladesh.
In separate condolence messages, Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader and health and family welfare minister Mohammad Nasim expressed shock at the death of Dr Zakaria.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University vice-chancellor Kamrul Hasan Khan, former vice-chancellors Mahmud Hasan and Pran Gopal Dutta deeply mourned the death, said a press release. Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman also expressed shock at the death.
