Habiganj superintendent of police Bidhan Tripura got a warning from the High Court Division Tuesday not to repeat a mistake he committed a year ago by setting Farmers Bank director Mohd Athar Uddin’s son Azmat Rahman free from police custody.
On February 15, 2017, Azmat was taken to police custody for trying to board a foreign bound flight at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport carrying a loaded pistol.
His loaded firearm was detected by security personnel just before he was waiting to cross the boarding bridge.
A bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim issued the warning to Bidhan as he had appeared before the court being summoned.
The SP sought apologies for the mistake he had committed by ordering the airport police station’s officer-in-charge to set Azmat free without producing him before a court.
At that time, Bidhan Tripura was Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner for the Uttara Zone.
On December 12, 2017, the bench in a suo moto ruling asked Bidhan, OC Nur-e-Azam and sub-inspector Sukanta Saha to personally explain why setting Azmat free without producing him in a court, though a general diary was pending against him for investigation, would not be declared illegal.
Azmat was debarred from boarding the flight and the police recorded the GD against him for entering into the airport carrying fire arms.
OC Nur and SI Sukanta submitted in their explanations that they set Azmat free following orders from the then DMP DC Bidhan Tripura.
