Pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University on Friday demanded immediate vice-chancellor panel election that will nominated a three-member panel of candidates for the post of vice-chancellor.
As per the Jahangirnagar University Act 1973, the chancellor, also the president of the country, will appoint a vice-chancellor for a period of four years from the three-member panel nominated by the Senate through the VC panel election.
JU teachers under the banners of Bangabandhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetanay Biswashi Pragatishil Shikkhak Samaj and Pragatisheel Jote, led by former vice-chancellor Shariff Enamul Kabir, also placed their 12-point demand at a press conference
in the National Press Club in Dhaka.
The teachers also vowed to take to the streets against the ‘unelected’ vice-chancellor and her ‘undemocratic’ practices’ on the campus.
‘To uphold the Jahangirnagar University Act 1973 the VC panel election is a must,’ Shariff Enamul said while reading out a written statement.
Their other demands include immediate election to JU Central Student Union, drives against ragging on students, action against drug abuse and steps to address session jam in the university.
JU senate members M Ebayedullah Talukder, M Shahedur Rashid, Layek Sajjad and Anwar Khasru Parvez were present at the programme among others.
