The customs intelligence on Thursday arrested two smugglers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and recovered 31 gold bars weighing 5.8-kg in total from their possession.
The arrested were identified as Keramot Ali, 58, resident of Fulgazi in Feni, and Lokman, 58, resident of Kadamtoli in Dhaka.
They arrived at the airport from Chittagong around 6:00pm and trying to get out of the airport through the domestic arrival point.
Acting on tip-off, a customs intelligence team intercepted the men and recovered the gold bars hidden inside their blazers, shoes and mobile phone covers, a customs intelligence release said.
A total of 28 gold bars were stitched inside the collar of one smuggler’s blazer and the rest were recovered from the shoes and mobile phone cover of the other, the release added.
Sources said that the flight had come from Bangkok via Chittagong and the customs intelligence officials suspected that the gold bars, worth Tk 2.90 crore, were handed over to the arrested in mid-air.
