Farmers in Panchagarh are happy with the bumper production of turmeric due to favourable weather conditions and fair produce prices in the current season.
The farmers have began harvesting turmeric from the fields and selling them at the local marketplaces and markets at around Tk 900 to Tk 1000 per maund.
Farmer Tota Mia of village Ramganj Bilashi in Debiganj upazila of the district said, ‘I have cultivated turmeric on 20 bighas of land like every year. After making account for all expenditures, I made a profit of Tk six lakh by selling the product.’
Deputy director of department of agriculture extension in Panchagarh Samchul Huque said that around 5,000 hectares of land were brought under the turmeric cultivation in the district this year.
Commercial banks, including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank, Janata Bank and other banks and NGOs have given short-term easy agriculture loans to the farmers for turmeric cultivation.
