Ruling MPs find Khaleda verdict as ‘milestone’ for rule of law

Ruling alliance lawmakers hailed a Dhaka court verdict that jailed Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia for five years in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and said that it was evidence that rule of law established in the country.

They, while talking on point of order at parliament on Thursday, also said that the verdict proves ‘none is above the law’ and ‘none would be spared for corruption’.

They also said that the verdict shows the way of ending politics of Ziaur Rahman’s family and Bangladesh Nationalist Party would not be able to come to power again.

‘Our constitution says all citizens are equal before law and the verdict once again proves that,’ Awami League lawmaker Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim said.

‘It is also proved that no crimes go unpunished,’ Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim also Awami League presidium member told the house.

He made the comments hours after The Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5 on Thursday jailed Khaleda Zia for five years and her eldest son and BNP’s senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and four others for 10 years in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case filed in 2008.

Tarique and the four were also fined Tk 2,10,71,000.

Khaleda was taken to the day care centre of the old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road at around 2:50pm.

Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim also said that Khaleda Zia tried to create scene at Moghbazar and other area while she was on her way to the court on the day.

BNP activists also attacked police at different places in the capital and Bangladesh High Commission in London in an attempt to thwart the verdict set for the day, he said.  

She [Khaleda] also dishonored judges as she reached court hours after judge reached the court, said Selim.

Jatiya Samajtanrik Dal lawmaker Shirin Akther said that the verdict reflected the expectation of people of the country.

‘Khaleda Zia’s jail was expected and the verdict proves that none is can avoid jail after doing corruption,’ Shirin Akther also JSD fraction general secretary said.

‘BNP leaders are saying that the verdict was revenge of prime minister Sheikh Hasina, which is absolute lie, there is no connection of politics with the verdict let alone PM’s revenge,’ she added.

JSD another fraction general secretary and lawmaker Nazmul Haque Pradhan said the verdict was long awaited by the people and it proved none is above the law.

He said that Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad doing politics in the Bangladesh accepting the punishments and Khaleda should follow the suit of Ershad.  

Bangladesh Tarikat Federation lawmaker Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary said that the verdict was ‘historic milestone’ for rule of law of Bangladesh.

‘Politics of Zia’s family comes to an end with the verdict. BNP would not be able to come to power again’ said Syed Nazibul Bashar also Tarikat Federation chairman.

The verdict once again proves that rule of law exists in the country, he said.

‘Khaleda Zia is jailed for embezzling money meant for orphan and for that I want to congratulate prime minister’ Bangladesh Nationalist Front chairman and lawmaker SM Abul Kalam Azad said.

AL lawmaker Fazilatun Nasa Bappy said Khaleda Zia has been identified as ‘cheat’ and the verdict was ‘historic’ and exemplary and for establishing rule of law and right of orphans.
