An activist of ruling Awami League was shot dead and 50 others, including five cops, were injuries in a clash between its two factions at Kanchan Bridge area of Rupganj in Narayanganj on Thursday.
Victim Mohammad Sujon was the son of Monu Mia of Rupshi Gobindapur village of Kayetpara union.
Police and locals said two AL factions — one loyal to Kayetpara union council chairman Rafiqul Islam and another loyal to local MP Gazi Golam Dastagir — took positions on a bridge at about 11:00am to inhibit BNP leaders and activists from taking to the streets and tackle any possible unrest over the verdict on a corruption case against BNP chairperson and five others.
But at one stage, members of the factions locked into an altercation and start fighting.
To bring the situation under control, police opened fire and shot tear gas canisters.
At least six persons, including Sujon, got shot at that time.
Later, the injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Sujon dead at about 1:30pm, said sub-inspector Bacchu Miah, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
Besides, 50 ruling party leaders and activists also hurt at the clash. Police detained 30 people from the spot.
Though some locals claimed that Sujon was killed in police firing, Narayanganj superintendent of police Moinul Haque denied the allegation.
