On the third evening of the ongoing nine-day inter-university theatre festival organised at Jahangirnagar University, the host troupe Jahangirnagar Theatre staged Manush at the university’s open stage on Monday.
Javed Mahmud’s play addresses the contemporary society, religious beliefs, politics and other issues through an imaginary story where human beings become slaves of robots, created by human beings.
The sci-fi play depicts frustrations of a seventh generation robot named Alen, who commits suicide after knowing the fact that the robot is not a human being but a machine having qualities of a human being.
The play was initially screened as a teleplay on BTV in 1996. Jahanagirnagar Theatre staged it as a theatre production in 2003. The latest production of the troupe, staged on Monday, was, however, directed by a present student of Jahangirnagar University named Nazmul Hossain.
