Theatre troupe Dhaka Padatik premiered its 38th production titled ‘Trial of Surya Sen’ at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Sunday.
The play, written and directed by Masum Aziz, depicts the trial of revolutionary Masterda Surya Sen, who is noted for leading the 1930 Chittagong armoury raid in Chittagong during the British rule.
Cultural personality Kamal Lohani was present at the premiere show as the chief guest. President of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote Golam Kuddus, president of Dhaka Padatik Mizanur Rahman and its general secretary Firoz Hossain, among others, were also present at the programme.
The play begins with Masterda Surya Sen’s trial in progress in a court room. Surya Sen is seen standing in front of the judge while a lawyer questions him about the activities of anti-British revolutionaries. As the play moves forward the audience gets a glimpse of the anti-British movement in Chittagong in 1930s.
The play brings to light India’s history during British colonial period.
Actor Nader Chowdhury played the character of Surya Sen. Hasna Hena and Mahbuba Haq Kumkum played the characters of Pritilata Waddedar and Kalpana Dutta respectively, while Mahbubur Rahman Toni played the character of the lawyer.
