Jahangirnagar University’s drama and dramatics department students perform in Nishimon Bisarjan at Jahangirnagar University.

Jahangirnagar University’s drama and dramatics department students staged Anan Zaman’s play Nishimon Bisarjan on Sunday at the open stage of the university as part of the nine-day inter-university theatre festival organised by Jahangirnagar Theatre on the campus.

Six public universities and the host troupe Jahangirnagar Theatre will stage plays at the festival.

In the play, Anon Zaman has illustrated the storyline of Tagore’s popular play Bishorjon. Zaman’s play depicts how religious superstition and religious fundamentalism creates obstacles on the way to social progress against the backdrop of rise of criminal activities in the name of religion.

The play starts with a dramatic monologue in which Nishimon, who lost her beloved, narrates her tragic story addressing the Gomti River.

Anan Zaman, a teacher at drama and dramatics department of JU, has directed the play.

Nishimon Bisarjan is also a regular production of the Dhaka-based troupe Mohakal Natya Dal. It has been directed by Ashik Rahman Lion.
