The number of active mobile subscribers increased to 14.51 crore at the end of December last year with the country’s second largest mobile operator, Robi, attaining highest 15.11 lakh fresh subscribers in the month.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission data showed that the number of active mobile phone users in the country was 14.31 crore in November, 2017.
Of the total mobile phone subscribers, market leader Grammenphone is at the top with 6.53 crore subscribers followed by Robi with 4.29 crore, Banglalink 3.23 crore and state-own Teletalk 44.94 lakh.
Grameenphone added 3.68 lakh users, Teletalk 75,000 and Banglalink 54,000 subscribers in December last year.
The actual number of mobile phone users would not be that much as there is a scope for holding multiple SIM cards by an individual, a BTRC official said.
Under the present rules, an individual can own up to 15 SIM cards against his or her national identification number, he said.
The data also showed that 3.17 lakh new subscribers started using internet in December, taking the total internet users in the country to 8.04 crore.
Of the internet users, most of the subscribers (7.50 crore) were mobile internet users while the number of WiMAX subscribers was 89,000 and 53.44 lakh subscribers used ISP and PSTN internet.
