The 194th anniversary of birth of poet Michael Madhusudan Dutt will be observed through different programmes in Jessore town and Sagardari, the birth place of the poet, under Keshabpur upazila in Jessore today.
A week-long fair has been organised at Sagardari marking the birth anniversary of the poet.
Punashcha Jessore will hold a special programme featuring discussion, cultural shows and others. Local artistes will present songs based on plays and poems of the poet at the event.
Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born at Sagardari under Keshabpur upazila in Jessore on January 25, 1824. Raj Narayan Dutta was his father. His mother’s name was Janhabi Devi. He died at Kolkata General Hospital at around 2pm on June 29, 1873.
Michael Madhusudan Dutt enriched Bengali literature with his plays, volumes on poetry and other literary works. He published his famous ballad Meghnad Badh Kavya (The Saga of Meghnad's Killing) in 1861. It is based on the demise of Meghnad, son of Ravana, the villain of the classic Sanskrit epic Ramayana. The ballad is divided into 9 different sargas. Each part exhibits different incidents. His other literary works include Sharmishtha (1859), Ekei Ki Bole Shabhyata (1860), Buro Shaleker Ghare Roan (1860), Padmabati (1860), Tilattama Shambhab (1860), Krishnakumari (1861), Nil Darpan (1861), Hectar Badh (1871), Mayakanan (1874), The Captive Lady (1849) and others.
