A Rajshahi court on Sunday summoned the editor and publisher of vernacular daily Prothom Alo and its correspondent in Rajshahi in two cases filed by two members of parliament of ruling Awami League for publishing ‘false reports’ against them recently.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court judge Mahbubur Rahman summoned the accused to appear before the court on February 5.

Rajshahi-1 MP Omar Faruk Chowdhury and Rajshahi-5 MP Kazi Abdul Wadud Dara filed two separate cases with Rajshahi Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 under section 499 and 500 of the penal code, said Ekramul Hauqe, a counsel of the plaintiff.

He said Omar Faruk Chowdhury, also president of Rajshahi District Awami League, and Kazi Abdul Wadud Dara, also president of Puthiya upazila Awami League, filed the cases against Matiur Rahman and Abul Kalam Muhammad Azad with the court for carrying two ‘confusing and defamatory’ reports on January 11 and 14.

According to the case statement, the vernacular daily carried out two 'false and fabricated' reports on January 11 and 14 which tarnished the image of the two MPs.

Meanwhile, Rajshahi Union of Journalist president Kazi Shahed and acting general secretary Saifur Rahman Rocky in a press release termed the case ‘harassing’ and demanded immediate withdrawal both of the cases on Sunday noon.
