At least 50 people, including Narayanganj city mayor Selina Hayat Ivy, were injured when supporters of Awami League lawmaker Shamim Osman allegedly attacked a procession, led by Ivy demanding hawker-free footpaths, Tuesday afternoon at Saiham Plaza point in the city.
The attack was committed only a day after Shamim Osman at a hawkers’ rally at Chasara in the city had announced that the hawkers would sit on footpaths for doing business from Tuesday.
Ivy was injured as she was hit with brick bats in the leg.
Of the injured who were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital are Jasim Uddin, 35, Nasir Hossain, 52, Hasan, 45, Rony, 25, Jahangir Alam, 65, and Kabir Mia, 38.
Four of them were injured with gun pellets while two others with brick bats.
Besides, NCC panel mayor Afsana Afroz Biva, district AL vice-president Abdul Quadir, joint-general secretary Jahangir Alam and member Mohammad Shahidullah, Narayanganj Press Club general secretary Sharifuddin Sabuij, journalist Amir Hossain Smith, Ivy’s bodyguard Shafique, younger brother Ahmed Ali Reza Uzzwal are among the injured.
Locals and sources in police said Ivy addressed a brief rally in front of the city corporation office in the afternoon and brought out a procession demanding hawker-free roads in the city as the city corporation had constructed hawkers’ market and allocated shops for hawkers there.
They hawkers were evicted from the city roads in the last week of December 2017 and, following AL lawmaker Shamim Osman’s Monday announcement, they came back to footpaths on Tuesday.
As Ivy’s procession reached near Saiham Plaza point at Chasara around 4:45pm, Shamim’s supporters, many of them hawkers, obstructed the procession when Ivy’s activists stood at the place forming a human wall around Ivy, witnesses said.
Meanwhile, the attackers began to hurl brick bats and at least two of the attackers were seen opening fire in the air, witnesses said.
They alleged that police remained inactive during the attack on the mayor and her associates.
At least 50 people, including Ivy, were injured during the attack.
Narayanganj police super Moinul Haque said that those involved in the incident would be brought to book and claimed that the situation was now under control.
