Rail communications between Chittagong and the rest of the country was snapped for about five hours when a DEMU train collided with a truck at a level crossing in Banashua area in Comilla Sadar upazila Saturday morning.
Comilla railway station master Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan said that a Comillabound diesel-electric multiple unit train from Akhaura hit a soil-laden truck around 10:00am while the truck driver was trying to cut across the level crossing near Palpara.
The train veered off the rail track following the collision but no casualty was reported in the incident, the station master added.
Rail movement between Chittagong, Dhaka and Sylhet came to a halt during the period while passengers were left stranded at different stations.
A salvage train from Laksam junction removed the train from the track restoring communications around 3:00pm.
The level crossing was unmanned and unauthorised, said member of ward no 7 in Sadar upazila Azad Rahman, adding that the truck driver had fled the scene after the collision.
