At least 50 people, including 2 cops, were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Tegharia village of Lakhai upazila in Habiganj on Saturday following previous enmity over a disputed land.
Of the injured, one was sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition and around 20 were sent to Habiganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital while others were given first aid at upazila health complex.
Locals said that there was a longstanding enmity between Milon Miah and Sabur Miah of Tegharia village at Lakhai upazila over ownership of a piece of land.
They said supporters of the both groups armed with locally made weapons were locked into a clash when both of the rival groups tried to take possession the land that injured over 50 people.
Later, a team of Lakahi police reached the spot around 1:30pm and took the situation under control after charging batons and firing teargas shells and bullets, police said.
Lakhai police officer-in-charge Bazlar Rahman said that they fired 35 teargas shells and 30 bullets to disperse the clashers and two police men were injured during the clash.
He said eight people were arrested from the spot during the clash.
He said in the evening that preparation was underway to file a case in this a connection.
