AL starts selling nomination forms

BNP to begin today

Ruling Awami League on Saturday started selling nomination forms for selecting its candidate for the forthcoming Dhaka North City Corporation by-poll slated for February 26 while main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on the day urged aspirants to buy the party nomination forms.
AL deputy office secretary Biplob Barua said that five mayoral aspirants bought party nomination
forms on the first day from Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmandi-3.
The aspirants are former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Atiqul Islam, Haque Group of Industries managing director Adam Tamizi Haque, Rassell Ashequi, Monipur School and College principal M Farhad Hossain and college teacher Shah Alam.
The nomination papers will be on sale till January 15 and the local government nomination board will finalise the party mayoral candidate at a meeting scheduled to be held on January 16 at Ganabhaban, the official residence of prime minster and also party president Sheikh Hasina.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee in a meeting, presided over by the party chairperson Khaleda Zia, at her Gulshan office on the day decided to start selling the party nomination forms today.
Emerging from the meeting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists that those who wanted to get the party nomination to contest the by-election were asked to collect forms from the party Naya Paltan office by 4:00pm.
The fee was fixed at Tk 10,000, according to a release signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
The nomination papers have to be submitted to the party’s central office by 4:00pm Monday with Tk 25,000 as security money.
The aspirants have to appear before the party’s nomination board for interview at the BNP chief’s Gulshan office at 8:30pm on Monday.
The standing committee meeting discussed few names of mayoral aspirants of BNP, the meeting sources said.
The names that came up for discussion at the meeting included Tabith Awal, Shakil Wahed, Asaduzzaman Ripon, Rumeen Farhana, Abdus Salam, Kamrul Islam  and  Barkatullah Bulu.
The meeting also discussed Friday’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s address to the nation particularly about poll-time government.
Jatiya Party, alliance partner of the ruling AL, joint secretary general Johirul Islam Johir told New Age that the party was yet to make any decision about contesting the poll.
Following the death of DNCC’s first mayor Annisul Huq on November 30, the Election Commission on January 9, declared the schedule for the DNCC by-election fixing January 18 as the last date for submission of nomination papers and February 26 as the voting day.
According to the EC, the commission officials would scrutinise the nomination papers on January 21 and 22.
The aspirants would be allowed to withdraw nomination papers by January 29.
Elections to the recently added 36 wards — 18 each in Dhaka north and south city corporations — will also be hold on the same day to elect 36 councillors and 12 reserved women councillors, EC said.
According to the commission, 29,48,510 voters are eligible to cast their votes.
