Mujahidul Islam Selim, founding general secretary of Bangladesh Khetmajur Samity, has urged the government to take immediate initiatives for removing water stagnation in haor areas.
He also demanded that the government should open the haor areas for all to catch fish immediately cancelling the lease system, said a press release issued by BKS.

formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka and brought out a procession on Friday.
Selim, also president of Communist Party of Bangladesh, while addressing the human chain programme, said, ‘Farmers could not grow crops as flood water is yet to recede at many points in haor areas after flash flood in the last year. Lease holders do not allow common people to catch fish from haor.’
He alleged that some beneficiary of the ruling party took away money which was allocated for development of haor areas.
He also demanded permanent solution of the problems in haor areas.
BKS leaders said that the authorities concerned were delaying construction of embankment in haor areas while the river excavation works were also going slowly.
They demanded that the government should take immediate initiatives to remove water logging, cancel the lease system, launch fruitful river excavation works, quicken the construction works of the embankment, and distribute winter cloths among haor residents.
They also urged the authorities concerned to take action against those who were responsible for the damage of crops in haor areas in the last year.
Among others, BKS president Sohel Ahmed, general secretary Anowar Hossain Reza, SKKF general secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz, Krishak Samity general secretary Sazzad Zahir Chandan and Garment Sramik Trade Union president Montu Ghosh, spoke at the programme.
