Defending champions BCB North Zone off to a winning start in the sixth edition of Bangladesh Cricket League as they defeated Walton Central Zone by nine wickets at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
North Zone bowlers dismissed Central Zone to 336 runs in their second innings after they resumed on 234-7 to set-up a 68-run winning target for them and they comfortably reached 70-1 to achieve the win.
In the other encounter at BKSP, the match between Islami Bank East Zone and Prime Bank South Zone ended in a draw after South Zone made 395 runs in their first innings.
East Zone reached 93-4 in their second innings before two teams accepted a draw.
Veteran spinner Abdur Razzak claimed 3-41 in the second innings but missed the opportunity to complete 500 wickets in first-class tournament being the first Bangladeshi.
Razzk, who took nine wickets in the game, has now 499 wickets to his name and must now wait for the next game to complete the feat.
North Zone v Central Zone
Resuming the final day on 234-7, Central Zone lost their overnight unbeaten batsman Mehrab Hossain (Jr) (18) early in the morning.
Skipper Mosharraf Hossain (61) and experienced Mohammad Sharif (24) added a 63-run partnership in the ninth wicket but their side only managed to give North Zone a target of 68 runs in the second innings.
Sohrawardi Shuvo finished with 4-71 while Ariful Haque who claimed four wickets in the first innings bagged 3-50 in the second innings.
Chasing a target of 68, Nazmul Hossain (31 not out) and Junaed Siddique (10 not out) sailed Central Zone to victory losing just their opener Mizanur Rahman (25).
Jahirul Islam was named man-of-the-match for his outstanding 158 off 244 deliveries in the first innings along with taking five catches behind the stumps in the second innings of North Zone.
South Zone v East Zone
Resuming their innings on 318-5, South Zone fell just one run short of follow-on mark when they were all out for 395 runs in their first innings replying to East’s 546 runs.
With no time left to take 10 wickets, East Zone decided against enforcing follow on and opted for batting practice, reaching 93-4 thanks to Liton Das’s unbeaten 51.
Earlier, Al Amin Jr. and Nurul Hasan added 53 more runs in the first session before East Zone bowlers made impact in the match as South Zone lost their last five wickets scoring just 24 runs.
Nurul struck 47 runs while Al Amin jr. remained unbeaten on 49 runs.
Spinner Sohag Gazi claimed his 19th five-wicket haul in the first-class cricket as he finished with 5-86 while his partner Nazmul Islam picked 3-127.
Mominul was named as the man-of-the match for his mesmerising 258 runs in the first innings.
