A three-day Selim Al Deen memorial festival featuring seminar and plays penned by the late eminent playwright commenced on Friday with a seminar held at seminar room of National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Dhaka Theatre and Bangladesh Gram Theatre have jointly organised the festival marking Selim Al Deen’s 10th death anniversary, which will be observed on January 14.
Playwright Masum Reza presented the keynote paper titled ‘Apan Natyabhume Pray Nisshonga Ekjon’ at the seminar. In his paper Masum Reza analysed plays and famous characters created by the late eminent playwright.
‘Selim Al Deen rejected the European format of staging plays and developed a new drama form based on the narratives of traditional indigenous theatre,’ said Masum Reza.
Professor of drama and dramatics department of Jahangirnagar University Afsar Ahmed presided over the seminar. Nasiruddin Yousuff, Dr Yousuf Hasan Arko, Abu Sayed Tulu, Shadona Ahmed and Altaf Shahnewaz, among others, also spoke at the event.
Selim Al Deen brilliantly depicted Bengali culture and traditions in his plays, said Nasiruddin Yousuff.
Today, Dhaka Theatre will stage Al Deen’s Nimojjon at the National Theatre Hall at 7pm. The play has been directed by Nasiruddin Yousuff.
Tomorrow, the organisers will place flower wreaths on the grave of Selim Al Deen on Jahangirnagar University campas at 10am. Dhaka Theatre will stage Al Deen’s play Dhaboman, directed by Shimul Yousuf, at Bangla Academy in the evening.
Besides, theatre troupe Swapnadal has organised a two-day festival marking Selim Al Deen’s 10th death anniversary. The festival will begin today with a solo lecture held at seminar room of National Theatre Hall of BSA.
