In less than a week after he was thrown out of national team, opener Soumya Sarkar found his name in less demanding position in domestic cricket as he was effectively put in fifth category for the Dhaka Premier League players’ draft.
The Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis on Friday announced players’ list for the draft to be held on January 20.
Soumya, an icon player in the recent Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament, was officially included in A+ category, but if the prices of the players were taken into consideration he had reasons to feel upset.
The CCDM listed 12 players in icon category with top five players – Mashrafee bin Murtaza, Sakib al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah getting Tk 35 lakh each.
The remaining seven icon players– Imrul Kayes, Mustafizur Rahman, Mehedi Hasan, Nasir Hossain, Liton Das, Anamul Haque and Rubel Hossain – will get Tk 25 lakh each.
In A+ category, Mominul Haque is the only cricketer with a fee of Tk 23 lakh while Mohammad Saifuddin, Mohammad Mithun and Mosaddek Hossain will get Tk 22 lakh from the same category.
Soumya comes next along with 20 players, who will get Tk 20 lakh each.
‘We considered the performance of last year’s DPL and BPL before we decided the price of a player. Soumya’s performance in the last year was below average,’ said CCDM chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed.
Inam explained that they put Liton Das and Anamul Haque in icon category as the duo performed well in previous league.
Liton, who was also left out of the national team for the upcoming tri-nation one-day tournament, scored 752 runs for Abahani Limited last year while Anamul scored highest 596 runs for eventual champions Gazi Group Cricketers.
Middle-order batsman Sabbir Rahman, who was banned for six-months from domestic cricket after he assaulted a fan during a National Cricket League match last month, could not find his place in the list.
Pacer Mustafizur Rahman has been included after he missed the previous edition of the league due to injury.
A total of 227 cricketers were divided in seven different categories including 12 icons, 24 Grade-A+, 27 Grade-A, 26 Grade-B+, 45 Grade-B, 31 Grade-C+ and 62 Grade-C players.
Clubs will be allowed to retain five players from the previous season but must submit the list of players to CCDM by January 14, six days before the players’ draft.
The league is scheduled to start on February 5.
