State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam on Thursday said that the ministry would strengthen public diplomacy by promoting Bangladeshi culture abroad.
In reply to a question, Shahriar, who attended the press conference of Dhaka International Film Festival as chief guest, said the ministry had already initiated some programmes in India, United Kingdom and the United States and would expand such activities soon.
Shahriar is the chief patron of the film festival.
‘Huge money is required for public diplomacy. Still, we will strengthen it as we understand its importance,’ said Shahriar.
‘Besides celebrating national days, Bangladesh consulates in India, United Kingdom and the United States organised many cultural programmes in the recent years,’ he added.
Bangladesh’s Cultural Policy, adopted in 2007, suggests foreign affairs ministry to work together with cultural affairs ministry and civil aviation and tourism ministry for branding Bangladesh and its culture abroad.
The cultural activists demand execution of the national cultural policy to promote the rich cultural heritages of country abroad set against the backdrop of the cultural diffusion operated by the foreign missions in Bangladesh.
