Abahani Limited received their Bangladesh Premier League trophy on Thursday but their glorious moment was overshadowed by a questionable match involving Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Farashganj Sporting Club.
Abahani were handed the trophy after their goalless draw against Chittagong Abahani but the preceding match between Jamal and Farashganj dominated the talks before the ceremony.
In a huge shock, Farashganj beat runners-up Jamal 3-1 to all but saved them from relegation which seemed always on the card throughout the campaign.
It raised their tally to 17 from 22 matches, taking them ahead of Rahamatganj MFS, who with 15 points, must now beat Saif Sporting Club in their final match if they are to stay in the top-flight.
Jamal outplayed Farashganj 5-0 in first phase thanks to four goals from Nigerian striker Raphael Odoyin.
But they left out Raphael from the game on the pretext of a hamstring injury and fielded a second string XI without regular campaigners Yeasin Khan, Zahed Parvez, Mezbabul Manik.
Farashngaj took a surprise 3-0 lead within 35 minutes of the match as Nigerian forward Chinedu Mathew struck on 24th and 30th minute before Mohammad Alamgir made it 3-0 in the 35th minute.
Gambian forward Solomon Kanform pulled one back from penalty in the 90th minute to make the margin 3-1 but it could do little to stop handful of Rahmatganj supporters present at the ground from booing the team.
