Loko Natya Dal (Siddheswari) will stage its popular production Sonai Madhab at Sudip Bhattacharya Auditorium in Kolkata, India on January 14.
The play will be staged at the 2nd International Theatre Festival which kicks off today.
Apart from Sonai Madhab, the four-day festival, organised by SB Park Sarbajanin, will also feature four Indian plays and a Brazilian play.
Sonai Madhab, directed by Liaquat Ali Lucky, is based on one of the 10 ballads of Maimansingha Gitika. It is a woman-centric romantic tragedy play.
The play, presented through songs, focuses mostly on the woes of Sonai, a rural fatherless girl brought up by her maternal uncle. How society strangles Sonai’s love for Madhab is presented in the production.
‘Sonai Madhab, one of the most popular theatre productions, has already earned much acclaim in Bangladesh, India and Hong Kong. We hope that the production will once again woo Indian theatre lovers in Kolkata’, said Liaquat Ali Lucky, who plays the character of Bhabana in the play.
A forty-member team of Loko Natya Dal will leave Dhaka for Kolkata tomorrow, said Lucky.
