A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with detective branch of police at Amtali of Alekhar Char area under Sadar upazila in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Abu Taher, 28, son of Abul Khayer Mia, a resident of Shangraish in Comilla.
Comilla police station officer-in-charge Abdul Salam Miah said the deceased was the prime accused in a case filed last year for mugging Tk 40 lakh of Max Company at Comilla EPZ area. He was also wanted in at least a dozen of cases.
This is the fourth death in ‘gunfight’ incidents or extrajudicial killing in the first week of the ongoing year, according to media reports.
There were a total of 162 deaths in shootout or encounter or crossfire and physical torture by law enforcing agencies in 2017, according to data preserved by human rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra.
Comilla district DB police officer-in-charge Manjurul Alam said they, on secret information that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery, raided Amtali area on the bank of the River Gumti.
Sensing the presence of police, he said, the suspected robbers opened fire on them, forcing the police to retaliate that triggered a ‘gunfight’ at around 1:30am.
Taher died on the spot and police managed to arrest one of his associates while the others managed to flee, the police officer said.
The arrested is Gias Uddin Liton, 30, of Chandpur Keranibari area under Comilla Sadar police station, he added.
He said they recovered a pistol, a magazine loaded with two bullets, a knife and a cleaver from the spot.
