A tribunal in Chittagong on Thursday sentenced six people to life term imprisonment in case over attempting to rape two cousins after abducting them in Lohagara upazila in 2005.
The lifers are – Arman Prokash Forman, 31, Farid Prokash LG Farid, 34, Mohammad Shahed, 31, Anwar Hossain, 32, Shahab Uddin, 31 and Mohammad Rubel, 31.
All of them were tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up two cousins near forest office when they went out of home for buying medicine in Padua union of Lohagara upazila on November 29, 2005.
They took the girl to an isolated place and tried to rape them. The criminals had fled the scene when the local people went to the spot hearing screaming of the girls.
Victim’s family members filed the case with Lohagar Police Station on November 31.
Police submitted charge sheet in 2006 and the court started formal trial in 2007.
After examining all the records and four witnesses, judge Mohammad Motahir Ali of women and children repression and prevention tribunal-2, handed down the verdict.
Police officer closed for Sylhet landslide

A police officer was closed on Thursday for his negligence in discharging duty at Goainghat upazila in Sylhet on Tuesday when a landslide had taken place killing five people and injuring five others.
Additional police superintendent in Sylhet, Shamsul Alam Sarker told New Age that Goainghat police sub-inspector Matiur Rahman was removed from his workplace around noon and attached to the district police-line.
Shamsul Alam said that Matiur was closed due to his negligence in discharging duty at the Mandirer Zum area on Tuesday noon when the landslide had taken place there.
A group of some 10 workers were extracting underground stones illegally by digging a deep hole at a stone quarry of Mandirer Zum in Jaflong under Goainghat upazila on Tuesday when a huge chunk of earth collapsed on them.
