A group of armed people abducted Mithun from his Aparna Chowdhury Para home in Khagrachari town in the noon when he returned home appearing before a court in a case. The abductors took him to Pankhaiyapara sluice gate area and shot him in the head and abdomen, said UPDF general secretary Rabi Shankar Chakma.
Locals rushed him to Khagrachari general hospital where physicians declared him dead, he said.
Tarek Mahmud Abdul Hannan, officer-in-charge of Khagrachari sadar police station, told reporters that unknown miscreants shot Mithun Chakma in the sluice gate area around noon.
Additional police have been deployed in the town to avert any unrest following the murder, the OC said adding that police are looking into the matter.
UPDF general secretary Rabi Shankar Chakma in a statement accused ‘neo masked goons created by military’ of murdering Mithun. ‘Mithun was devoted leader of the movement for full autonomy of the hill tracts. Hill people will recall his contribution in the movement against occupation of land,’ he said.
The Jatiya Mukti Council has convened a protest rally in Dhaka in the afternoon protesting against the murder of Mithun.
