Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday changed the portfolios of three ministers and a state minister and allotted ministries to the four newly appointed ministers in a major reshuffle in her expanded cabinet.
Newly appointed AKM Shahjahan Kamal has been given the civil aviation and tourism ministry in place of Rashed Khan Menon, who has been given the social welfare ministry, cabinet secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam announced at a press briefing at the secretariat in the afternoon.
Portfolios of water resources minister Anisul Islam Mahmud and environment and forests minister Anwar Hossain have been interchanged while state minister for posts and telecommunication Tarana Halim has been transferred to the information ministry as state minister, he added.
Narayan Chandra Chanda has been promoted from state minister as minister of the fisheries and livestock ministry.
The reshuffle came just a day after three new faces ruling Awami League lawmaker from Lakhmipur 3 constituency AKM Shahjahan Kamal, AL lawmaker from Rajbari 1 constituency Kazi Keramat Ali and IT expert Mustafa Jabbar were inducted in the cabinet at the fag end of the AL-led government’s five year tenure.
Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services president Mustafa Jabbar has been given the posts, telecommunications and information technology ministry, Kazi Keramat Ali has been made state minister for madrassah and technical education, according to a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division later on the day.
Nuruzzaman Ahmed, who was given the charge of the social welfare ministry, would now work as state minister of the same ministry, according to the gazette notification.
With the latest expansion, the cabinet, led by Sheikh Hasina, has now 53 members — 33 ministers, 17 state ministers and two deputy ministers.
Hasina extended her cabinet for the first time on February 26, 2014 by inducting Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali as foreign minister and Nazrul Islam as state minister for water resources.
In the second reshuffle on July 14, 2015, Chittagong city ruling Awami League leader Nurul Islam was made expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment minister, AL MP from Lalmonirhat 2 Nuruzzaman Ahmed was made state minister for social welfare and AL MP Tarana Halim was made state minister for posts and telecommunications division.
The same day, state minister for home Asaduzzaman Khan and state minister for science and technology Yeafesh Osman were sworn in as ministers of the respective ministries.
The prime minister on July 9, 2015 removed Syed Ashraful Islam from the ministry of LGRD and cooperative making him a minister without portfolio and he was later made public administration minister on July 16.
She also gave the charge of the LGRD ministry to Khandkar Mosharraf Hossain on July 9. Mosharraf was responsible for expatriates welfare and overseas employment ministry.
On October 12, 2014, telecom minister Abdul Latif Siddique was fired from the cabinet of Sheikh Hasina in the face of widespread protests against his recent remarks on Islam, its Prophet Mohammad (SM) and hajj. In September 2015, then social welfare minister Syed Mohsin Ali died.
The post of fisheries and livestock minister fell vacant after Muhammed Sayedul Hoque passed away on December 16.
