At least 30 people, including nine police men, were injured in a clash between police and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jatiyatabadi Chatradal, the party-backed student organisation, at Pabna district headquarters on Monday afternoon.
Of the injured BNP central body member Hasan Jafir Tuhin, BNP Pabna district unit secretary Habibur Rahman Tota, office secretary Johurul Islam, and BNP activist Abul Kashem were admitted to Pabna Medical College Hospital; and later, Abul Kashem was shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospial in a critical condition.
JCD Pabna district unit president Himel Rana told reporters that they, in association with BNP leaders and activists, arranged a procession marking the founding anniversary of JCD.
‘The police opened fire on us and charged us with baton after we brought out the procession from the party office in Gopalpur area around 12:30pm to disperse the gathering,’ Rana said.
Denying the allegation, Pabna Sadar police officer-in-charge Md Abdur Razzak said that the police charged the BNP-JCD activists with baton and opened fire on them as they hurled brick and chips at the police.
The police opened 41 shots and nine tear shells to disperse the demonstrators, the OC said, adding that nine policemen were injured in the incident.
Of them, constable Masum Hossain and constable Mohsin Ali were in a critical condition and they were undergoing treatment at Pabna Medical College Hospital.
The police arrested 26 BNP and JCD activists in this connection and a case would be filed, the OC added.
