The detective branch of police in Comilla said that a suspected robber was killed in a gunfight between the detectives and a group of robbers at Chandina early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Shamim, 25, son of Sadequr Rahman, a resident of village Kashimpur in the upazila.
DB sub-inspector Shah Kamal Akand said that the gunfight occurred while a DB police team was patrolling different areas of Chandina.
‘When we reached Chhaygharia on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway around 2:40am, the robbers intercepted our microbus with local weapons and rod bars in an attempt to rob the vehicle, not realising that we were law enforcers,’ he said.
The DB members chased the robbers who in return opened fire on the law enforcers, triggering a gunfight which left Shamim critically injured.
The other robbers managed to escape but the detectives recovered one locally made gun and sharp weapons from the spot.
Later, Shamim was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the SI added.
Shamim’s family members, however, alleged that Shahim was picked up by some men in plainclothes from his village home on Saturday.
