The Rapid Action Battalion on Sunday arrested four members of banned islamist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh at Chapainwabganj and Cox’s Bazar and three members of Ansar al Islam at Dhaka.

RAB arrested three suspected members of JMB at Kamardaha in Chapainawabganj early Sunday, reports United News of Bangladesh.

The arrestees are identified as Azibul Haque, 53, Saiful Islam, 35, residents of Dhobra and Tazamul Haque, 46, a resident of Lakshmipur.

Based on secrete information that around nine JMB men were holding a clandestine meeting at Kamardaha to carry out subversive activities, a RAB team operated a drive there, said RAB-5 of Chapainawabganj.

During the drive, the RAB arrested Azibul and Saiful from the spot while other members of the gang fled the scene sensing the presence of the law enforcers.

Later, RAB personnel arrested Tazamul from his home based on the information of two arrestees.

RAB members also recovered four Jihadi books from the spot.

In Cox’s Bazar, RAB detained 30-year-old Sharful Awal near Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya for allegedly communicating with international Jihadist groups.

Awal was freed on bail in January after he was charged with anti-terrorism and explosives-related offences in the Chittagong region, RAB local chief Ruhul Amin said in a statement, reports Agence France Presse.

But after his release, Awal ‘communicated with various international militant groups through social media in an effort to establish Khilafat through so-called Jihad,’ Amin said.

Police allege Awal is a member of a new faction of the Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh, a homegrown Islamist group, and was involved in organising local extremists.

The new JMB faction has been blamed for a wave of attacks on foreigners and religious minorities, including the deadly attack on a posh Dhaka cafe last year in which 18 foreigners were shot and hacked to death.

But the RAB's Amin said authorities have not found any connections so far between Awal and Rohingya refugees.

In Dhaka, the RAB-11 arrested Ansar al Islam Bangladesh member Ahmadullah Patwary alias Imran alias Farhad alias Sunny alias Shyamal, 21, at Basundhara residential area.

On information provided by him, RAB also arrested Jabale Noor Siam alias Musaab, 24, and Mufti Hossain Ahmed alias Hossain alias Belal, 32, at Sabujbagh in Dhaka, said Ashique Billah, deputy commanding officer of RAB 11.
